The Illuminate Conference recently held with partners and users was the first of a series seeking to widen the debate on AI and associated technologies. This talk opened the Conference; Rob Bell gave a summary of the status in a complex field triggering a vigorous debate amongst panelists and participants.

The global debate on AI boils down to two questions: “can we?” and “should we?” – the order and energy with which they are answered is as important as the questions themselves. AI can be the solution to humankind’s challenges from climate to conflict. And yet, this could be man’s last invention. As a recent New Scientist leader puts it: these AI systems may be the most complex we have had to regulate but none of it is magic. Those creating HIs need to stop acting like it is. Ouch!
