Making the right decision now by considering all possible implications in the future is no easy task. Without an automated approach, this can be nearly impossible. Mathematical techniques can be compelling, but they are extremely difficult to implement when dealing with long-term decision-making and an environment rich with uncertainty. In this space, Deep Reinforcement Learning is gaining attention. Why? Because it can deliver a trained decision-making policy for even the most complex, non-linear environment. In this session presented at INFORMS Business Analytics Conference 2021 by Luigi Manca, our Head of Simulation & Digital Twin at Engineering Group, the two real use cases presented aim to highlight the benefits that deep reinforcement learning can bring to the industrial sector. In the first, we explore its application in identifying an optimal Operations & Maintenance strategy for a wind turbine farm. In the second, we look at how Artificial Intelligence enabled a large Food & Beverage distributor to make smarter decisions about production sequencing, reducing order processing time by 16%.
