The good folks at Apple Machine Learning Research just dropped a bombshell report on the current state of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and what progress we are making toward achieving the Holy Grail of AI: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Entitled: “The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity”, the study contains surprising results from a series of tests that Apple researchers performed on various AI models to better understand the way they think and their capacity for “generalizable reasoning”.

The results of this research shed valuable light on the likelihood of seeing a successful development of AGI in the near-to-mid term and gives members of the public a rare look at what’s going on behind the scenes, away from all the publicly-released AI hype.
